Personal data
The Italian Legislative Decree N. 193/2003 (hereinafter referred to as : "the Law") regulates the treatment of personal data. Personal data are defined as any information concerning a natural or legal person, body or association (hereinafter referred to as “the person concerned”) who give their consent to the unequivocal identification, either direct or indirect. As for the treatment of personal data, it implies the following activities:

• gathering, filing, arrangement and conservation;

• processing, selection, extraction and comparison;

• modification, blockage, cancellation and deletion.

The above mentioned Law requires, in principle and with few specific exceptions, that the person concerned gives his/her consent. The law has created the figure of a Data Protection Supervisor, a collegial body responsible for the protection of the persons concerned about the treatment of personal data is concerned. The law also provides for the person concerned to be informed about the content of the Law with particular reference to their rights; this information has been summed up in this information note.

Rights of the person concerned. Art. 7 of the Law provides the person concerned with specific rights. In particular, the person concerned is entitled to receive from the owner a confirmation that his/her personal data exist and that such data be submitted to him/her in an intelligible way. In addition, the person concerned can ask to get to know the origin of the data, as well as the logic and purpose underlying the treatment of the data; to obtain the cancellation, transformation into anonymous form or blocking of the data in case the treatment breaks the Law; the person concerned can also ask for updating, correction or, if required,  integration of the data; to oppose the treatment for legal reasons.
